Our Coaches

Manuel Guittet

Manuel Guittet is an ambidextrous fencing master. He immigrated to Canada in 1978, and was the Technical Director of the Canadian Fencing Federation from 1985 to 1989. A former French international foilist, Manuel continues the family tradition in the sport. His parents are former World Champions in épée and foil while his stepdaughter and pupil, Thalie Tremblay, twice member of the Canadian Olympic Women's Foil Team, holds the best-ever Canadian Olympic result in foil. Another of his students, Sherraine Schalm, became the first non-European to win the World Cup in 2006 and holds the best-ever Canadian Olympic result in épée. Most recently, Manuel was the Head Coach of the 2000 Canadian Olympic Team.

Paul ApSimon

Paul ApSimon is a long time presence on the Canadian fencing scene. For years a competitive athlete, Paul has represented Canada at World and Commonwealth Championships and has numerous National and Provincial Championships to his credit. He is a certified 3M NCCP Level 3 Foil coach, and is currently both Coach at the Excalibur Fencing Club and Head Coach at the RA Fencing Club. As varsity fencing coach at the University of Ottawa, Paul coached the men's and women's teams to six consecutive provincial titles. In 1997 he was named Team Leader for the Canadian University Fencing Team at the FISU Games in Sicily, and in 2000 was appointed the Team Leader for the Canadian Olympic Team in Sydney, Australia.
